How effective is massage?
What effect does massage have on the body?
Massage aims to reduce the tension within muscles and tendons. Constant strain on a muscle can cause tightness which in turn, leads to a pulling effect on the limb or joint, thus reducing the normal range of movement. As the area becomes more chronic, it becomes more inflamed and then as the pain increases the body is less inclined to use that limb and will often protect it. A lack of use decreases circulation and can often cause shortness in the muscle.
Massage aims to gently move and stretch the muscle out in order to regain the full movement. It is particularly useful as a muscle can be moved passively, that is without the body having to make any effort to move the muscle itself. This also increases the circulation which increases the red blood cells and aids in any repair or recovery.
It also releases endorphins which are our own natural’ happy’ drug and this in turn releases tension, reduces inflammation and aids wellbeing both physically and mentally!
