Hot or Cold?

When we get an injury, niggle or area of pain, should we put an ice pack on it or cuddle up with a hot water bottle or wheaty bag?

To understand this better we need to know why you body does this and what it’s telling us.

In response to an injury the body sends extra white bloods cells called neutrophils to the injured area causing increased blood flow and also inflammation. Despite the pain, this is good and means our bodies are responding correctly. However, inflammation causes us pain and often restriction in the case of serious injury such as a bone fracture.

The best way to promote healing is to increase blood flow to that area by creating more natural movement of the limb which also results in less pain.

This is where we, as masseurs, come in! We can work around the injury (in the case of tears and strains) or directly over a tight muscle. In this way we aid the increase in blood flow to the area. If you can’t get to see us straight away, what can you do in the meantime?

Of course breaks must be dealt with at A & E but tears (of a minor level), strains and sprains can be aided by the application of ice.

Frozen peas, ice cubes in a bag or a gel pack are great for this.

To apply, wrap the ice in a tea towel and apply for 10to 15 minuets.

If an injury feels more like a stiffness in a joint or muscle and feels like it needs help to get going, applying a hot water bottle (with suitable covering) or wheaty bag for 10 to 15 minuets will do the trick.
