Post Surgery Massage
Post Surgery Massage
Is it safe?
Did you know that massage can be used, post surgery to aid recovery and help reduce pain?
Provided there were no complications and surgery went well, careful massage can begin within four to five days with the approval of the surgeon and should form part of any rehabilitation plan.
During this period no surgical dressings will be removed, instead the masseur will work a short distance from the wound so as not to disturb it or any sutures.
After a week, the therapist can work closer to the suture and eventually work on the underlying tissues beneath the scar to help improve the skin and tissue elasticity, which can result in a visibly reduced scar.
Massage is also useful in aiding increased muscle strength. Most patients will have had some muscle disfunction prior to surgery and this can also be the case post surgery. This can be a very useful resource to aid recovery and improve movement.
